Three women, two photographers, Rocío Bueno and Elisa Miralles, and one poet, Esther Ramón, are joining forces to address a everyday topic which at the same time is a little dealt with topic. To do so, they will explore the possibilities of reading texts and showing photobooks:

«Instinct?, cultural imposition?, desire, social obligation?, free choice?
The photographers Rocío Bueno and Elisa Miralles, accompanied by the poet Esther Ramón, organise this BookJockey Session on the dilemma of whether or not to be a mother and how to face the fact of being one. They will do so by means of images from 20 photobooks structured through the poem “Three women” by Sylvia Plath, whose central theme is motherhood. In it, each voice represents a way of living it, the woman who focuses her fulfilment on being a mother, the one who suffers for not being able to be one and the one who is one in spite of herself.»

Las fotógrafas Rocío Bueno y Elisa Miralles, acompañadas de la poeta Esther Ramón, organizan esta sesión de bookjockey en torno a la disyuntiva de ser o no ser madre y como afrontar el hecho de serlo. Lo harán mediante imágenes de 20 fotolibros vertebradas a través del poema “Tres mujeres” de Sylvia Plath, que tiene como tema central la maternidad. En él cada voz representa una forma de vivirla, la mujer que centra su realización en ser madre, la que sufre por no poder serlo y la que lo es a su pesar.»

May finishes with a BookJockey Session in FotoArte 2022, which is the 17th edition of the photo contest organized by Vitoria-Gasteiz city council to «to discover in an attractive way the artistic activity in any of its phases of formation, creation, exhibition or consumption». And so, just before the prize-giving ceremony, Camilo Amaya and Maite Romero will mix some books. A really nice way to discover photography and photobooks, isn’t it?

As they write on the web of the activity, this session will have three parts, namely:
1-Seeing (more figurative)
2-Feeling (more abstract)
3-Acting (more political)

Mayo acaba con una sesión BookJockey en FotoArte 2022, que es la 17ª edición del certamen fotográfico organizado por el ayuntamiento de Vitoria-Gasteiz para «descubrir de una forma atractiva la actividad artística en cualquiera de sus fases de formación, creación, exhibición o consumo.» Y así, justo antes de la ceremonia de entrega de los premios, Camilo Amaya y Maite Romero mezclarán unos libros. Una bonita manera de descubrir la fotografía y los fotolibros, ¿verdad?

Como escriben en la web de la actividad, esta sesión tendrá tres partes, a saber:
1-Ver (más figurativo)
2-Sentir ( más abstracto)
3-Actuar (más político)

Yesterday, a photobookjockey on Japanese photography took place in the impressive setting of the church of San Telmo Museum, by Juan Cires, a great specialist in this topic. Juan knows Japanese photography like (almost) nobody, and especially its photobook side.

Being able to enjoy his presence, yesterday in the church, was a luxury. Dansu, dansu, dansu turned out to be a sort of performance, mixing image, film, sound and books, as well as reading of texts.

Japan is a world apart, and as Juan said, entering its culture is, for a foreigner, like finding himself on Mars. He led us by the hand through its history, its traditions, through the hidden corners of its physical or sentimental geography, all represented in the books. Part of those were from Juan’s collection, a well-kept treasure that he wanted to share with us, and the other part came from the more contemporary collection deposited in San Telmo. In this way, any representation of Dansu, dansu, dansu is unique, although Juan has already shown it twice, in Madrid and Granada.

Japanese photobooks are a special world within photobooks, so ingrained is this medium of expression within Japanese photography. This would not be understood without the book, its natural means of communication, almost of existence.

Ryuichi Kaneko, a great historian of Japanese photography, a great collector, and also participant in the Photobook Phenomenon exhibition, died last July, and this bookjockey was also a tribute to him, the one that has worked the most to publicize the Japanese photobook throughout the world.

Dansu, dansu, dansu gets its name from a novel by Haruki Murakami, and Juan picks up the idea of ‘​​dance’, to create a choreography of images and sound that go from traditional Butō to the most ferocious experimentation.

This, the second in the already long list of activities organized by the Gabriela Cendoya Bergareche Collection in San Telmo, has been intense, exciting and spectacular.

Third occasion to assist to this Dansu, Dansu, Dansu BookJockey Session by Juan Cires. It’s been two years and a pandemic since this same session took place in Granada. Last summer was not possible to organize it in San Telmo, but luckily they were able this year.

This time photobooks and public will meet at the church inside the Museum, a magnificent scenario for an event like this. It was also the place chosen by Julián Barón and Colin Pantall for their joint session, back in 2018.

For this third version, Juan Cires will mix books from their own collection with other selected from the Gabriela Cendoya Bergareche Collection.

Juan Cires will lead a BookJockey session on Japanese photobooks. Under the title Dansu Dansu Dansu, taken from a novel by Haruki Murakami, he will show us a selection of photography books of Japanese origin that, somehow, dance among themselves.

Tercera ocasión para asistir a esta sesión BookJockey titulada Dansu, Dansu, Dansu, a cargo de Juan Cires. Han pasado dos años y una pandemia desde que esta misma sesión tuvo lugar en Granada. El verano pasado no fue posible organizarla en San Telmo, pero afortunadamente este año sí han podido.

Esta vez los fotolibros y el público se encontrarán en la iglesia del Museo, un escenario magnífico para un evento como este. También fue el lugar elegido por Julián Barón and Colin Pantall para sus sesión conjunta en 2018.

Para esta tercera versión, Juan Cires mezclará libros de su propia colección con otros seleccionados de la Colección Gabriela Cendoya Bergareche.

Between November 2020 and April 2021 have been celebrated another two BookJockey Sessions in Zaragoza and Valencia, both in Spain, that I missed so I failed to announce them on time. I will back at them as soon as possible.

So, apparently, we are reaching the vaccination season retaking the last session we announced. But it is a mirage. This is what Laura C. Vela, Xirou Xiao and Miguel Aparicio are going to perform about:

«The piece is a “landscape” where images sound and words are seen. Three beings from different worlds, different trajectories and different “languages” causing the borders to dance and the breath to flow collectively.»

Entre noviembre se 2020 y abril de 2021 se han celebrado otras dos sesiones BookJockey en Zaragoza y Valencia, ambas en España, que me he perdido y no he anunciado a tiempo. Volveré con ellas tan pronto me sea posible.

Así que parece que llegamos a la temporada de vacunación retomando la última sesión anunciada. Pero es un espejismo. Así nos dicen que va a ser su sesión Laura C. Vela, Xirou Xiao y Miguel Aparicio:

«La pieza es un “paisaje” donde las imágenes suenan y las palabras se ven. Tres seres de distintos mundos, distintas trayectorias y distintas “lenguas” haciendo que bailen las fronteras y el aliento fluya colectivamente.»

Almost finishing this horrible pandemic year we are having a BookJockey Session, an online, free for all session, organized by the Spanish PhotoBook Festival Fiebre, that this year has changed their venue in Madrid, Spain by an online platform. All the usual activities and Book Market are present on this platform, so it is another BookJockey Session. Three are the artists united on this show: Laura C. Casi al final de este horrible año de pandemia tenemos una Sesión BookJockey, una sesión online y gratis para todos, organizada por el festival español de fotolibros Fiebre, que este año ha cambiado su sede en Madrid, España por una plataforma virtual. We are data has created in Azkuna Zentroa for any kind of open activitiy related to open source theme, as is the BookJockey Sessions format. For the second installment of BookJockey Sessions in Fiebre there is a double experience, an exhibition and a session. Both has been designed to express a tribute to Eloi Gimeno, a key graphic designer and creator in those exciting early years of the spanish photobooks. Sadly, he passed away on February 2019 and his friends had created an Association of Friends of Eloi Gimeno to take care, preserve and disseminate his work. Fiebre is back one more year, earlier in the calendar, and with it two BookJockey Sessions. On this post I’ll introduce the first session, which is an assigment of the Festival to a new couple of performers who had made other sessions, alone or also in a four handed session, but had never worked together up to now. They are Gabriela Cendoya Bergareche and Juan Cires, with the help of a speaker who is Aránzazu San Ginés. They are going to join their shared passion about Japanese photobooks, as they say:

Gabriela Cendoya and Juan Cires will present a selection of Japanese photobooks from their collections. Gabriela selected contemporary photobooks and Juan opted for more classical examples. Together, the books are presented in counterpoint, and illustrate the range of photographic practices in Japan, from the more chaotic to the more poetic. The photobooks will be presented seasoned with texts by the photographers.

Fiebre vuelve un año más, se anticipa en el calendario, y con ellos dos sesiones BookJockey. En este artículo voy a presentar la primera sesión, que es un encargo del Festival a una nueva pareja de BookJockeys, que ya han hecho otras sesiones, en solitario o también en sesiones a cuatro manos, pero que nunca habían trabajado juntos hasta ahora. Son Gabriela Cendoya Bergareche y Juan Cires, con la ayuda de una locutora que es Aránzazu San Ginés. Van a unir su pasión compartida por los libros de fotografía japoneses, como dicen ellos:

Gabriela Cendoya y Juan Cires presentan una selección de fotolibros japoneses de sus respectivas colecciones. Gabriela ha elegido libros contemporáneos y Juan ha optado por libros más clásicos. Juntos, los libros se presentan en contrapunto, e ilustran las diversas prácticas fotográficas en Japón, desde lo más caótico a lo más poético. Los fotolibros se mostrarán aliñados con textos de los propios fotógrafos.
